Dark matter detector finds a strange signal scientists can’t yet explain

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a powerful underground dark matter detector, has recorded a mysterious single particle event that scientists cannot explain with known physics. This finding, while not statistically strong enough to be considered a discovery at 2.6 sigma, represents the most compelling potential dark matter signal reported by LZ so far. Researchers from the international project, involving 250 scientists from 39 institutions, analyzed 220 days of observations between March 2023 and April 2024, uncovering this intriguing event in a region where dark matter is expected and background signals are low. If the signal is indeed from dark matter, it suggests a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with a mass of at least 200 GeV/c², much heavier than a proton, and implies a more complex interaction than typically modeled. The LZ collaboration will continue gathering data to determine if the statistical significance of this unique event increases, potentially marking the first detection of WIMP dark matter.
