Fed's Waller says central bank's next rate move depends on upcoming inflation report

Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller stated that an upcoming inflation report will largely determine his stance on an interest rate hike later this month. If the August inflation figures, due September 11, show continued cooling, Waller would support keeping the benchmark interest rate unchanged. However, if inflation "comes in hot," he would consider a rate hike, noting that current borrowing costs are only "slightly restricting" demand. Waller's comments, made on Thursday, add to the weight of the inflation data, especially after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh indicated last week that the Fed might have "more work to do" regarding inflation, leading Wall Street investors to increase bets on a September rate hike. The Fed's next meeting is scheduled for September 15-16.
