GTA 6 Is Completely Changing How You Steal Cars

GameSpot · 2026-09-03

Grand Theft Auto 6 will completely overhaul carjacking mechanics, moving beyond the simple button press of previous games. Players will now encounter two primary methods for stealing vehicles: parked cars and occupied cars. For parked cars, options include using a slim jim, potentially involving a lockpicking minigame, though this method's effectiveness will vary by vehicle year and model. Newer or more expensive cars may require different approaches, and many stolen vehicles will feature tracking devices that alert police, necessitating an item to disable them for a clean getaway. Items like the slim jim and tracker-disabling tools are not initially available and must be acquired through story progression or side objectives. Driving fast enough can temporarily evade tracking, adding a new element of tension. Stealing occupied vehicles may involve a quick-time minigame to remove the driver, and passengers might also resist. The game introduces an app called Waink to scan vehicles for security systems and registration costs. Abandoning a registered vehicle while wanted could lead to police setting perimeters or impounding the car if left too long, potentially requiring players to sneak into impound lots or pay fees to retrieve them. These changes suggest that players will need to pre-plan robberies and acquire specific tools, as better vehicles will become available as the game progresses.
