Video game console prices could increase again as the Trump administration reportedly considers implementing a new round of tariffs on imported computer chips. Politico indicates that the administration, led by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, is weighing expanding duties to include everyday electronics like gaming consoles, data center servers, and laptops, aiming to incentivize foreign tech companies to build manufacturing plants in the US. This would not be the first time tariffs under Donald Trump have impacted console prices, with hardware from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft previously increasing. While these companies cited broader economic instability for price hikes, they acknowledged that tariff refunds significantly helped their finances after the US Supreme Court declared Trump's tariffs unlawful earlier this year. These refunds were not passed on to consumers, though PlayDate handheld maker Panic confirmed it would refund customers who paid increased prices due to tariffs. The proposed plan is not yet finalized and could change.
