Nicolás Maduro, the former Venezuelan president, has released photos from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he has been held for eight months on drug trafficking charges following a major U.S. military operation in Caracas in January. The images, which he shared to provide "a small gift of hope" to his family and supporters, show him flashing peace signs. Maduro stated that he and his wife, Cilia, who is also in U.S. custody on related charges, remain "strong, serene, and confident," adding that "Venezuela will be reborn." The photos emerged two days after President Donald Trump announced a deal securing U.S. majority control over 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil. Maduro and his wife have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to send cocaine into the U.S. and face potential life sentences if convicted at their trial scheduled for June 2027.
