A new study published July 1, 2026, in *PLOS One* involving over 2,000 older adults in Japan has revealed a significant association between lower vitamin C levels and diminished brain health. Led by Haruka Nagaya of Hirosaki University, the research indicates that individuals with reduced blood plasma vitamin C tend to have smaller gray matter volume and weaker connectivity within the default mode network, a critical brain region for memory and attention. This observational study, building on prior work suggesting vitamin C's role in cognitive health, analyzed MRI scans and blood samples from 2,044 Japanese adults over 64, controlling for factors like age and education. While not proving causation, the findings strengthen the hypothesis that diet, specifically adequate vitamin C intake, could contribute to maintaining brain structure and function, potentially mitigating age-related cognitive decline.
