Research led by Professor Carl Sayer at UCL Geography found that an abandoned two-hecthectare farm field in North Norfolk, which ceased farming in 2005, naturally transformed into a species-rich wildflower meadow over 11 years (2011-2022) with minimal intervention beyond an annual hay cut. The study, published in *Restoration Ecology*, observed a doubling of plant species per survey plot, from about 10 in 2011 to nearly 20 by 2022, and the natural establishment of thousands of orchids and yellow rattle. This finding challenges the common assumption that restoring species-rich grassland requires commercial seed mixes or other expensive measures, suggesting that allowing natural ecological processes to unfold can restore biodiversity and preserve local genetic diversity. Professor Sayer emphasized that patience and nature-led recovery could be more effective for large-scale biodiversity restoration, offering a simpler, less costly approach.
