Scientists turn one of the hardest plastics to recycle into high-performance engine lubricant

Virginia Tech scientists have developed a method to transform polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the most challenging plastics to recycle, into polyalphaolefin, a key component in high-performance lubricants like engine oil. Published in Nature on August 5, the research addresses the growing issue of PVC waste, which often ends up in landfills due to its chlorine content and varied additives, while also meeting the increasing demand for sustainable lubricants. This innovative upcycling process, led by chemist and chemical engineer Guoliang "Greg" Liu, converts discarded PVC from sources like plumbing and window structures into a valuable product, thus reducing plastic pollution and providing an environmentally friendlier alternative to traditionally produced lubricants. The team, including graduate students Eric Munyaneza Nuwayo, Connor Thompson, and Abby Civiello, initially experimented with chemically transforming PVC molecules before realizing that breaking down the polymer chains into smaller segments yielded the desired gooey, soft material that could then be processed into a high-performance oil. The resulting lubricant was tested for its capabilities at Texas A&M University, with economic and production analyses also conducted, as the researchers aim to scale up production to make this "green" lubricant more widely available.
