The Best SNES RPG You Likely Never Played Is Getting A Modern Re-release
GameSpot · 2026-08-24
After 30 years, the cult classic Super NES action-RPG *Terranigma*, originally released only in Europe, is finally receiving a global re-release in early 2027. Publisher Clear River Games announced the title for PS5, Xbox Series X\|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC. *Terranigma*, developed by the now-defunct Quintet and published by Enix, was the third in a trilogy including *Soul Blazer* and *Illusion of Gaia*. Its original limited availability stemmed from Enix’s US subsidiary closure before its launch and Nintendo of America passing over the title, despite Nintendo of Europe localizing it into multiple languages.
The game puts players in the role of Ark, a youth whose village is cursed after he opens a mysterious box, leading him on an epoch-crossing quest to revive the world. As a late SNES title, it is celebrated for its intricate pixel-art graphics and music, alongside an ambitious narrative and visual design overseen by manga creator Kamui Fujiwara. While specific changes for the re-release were not fully detailed, the announcement mentions "a host of upgrades, tweaks and bonus features," with hopes that notorious difficulty spikes might be addressed.
